Friday & Saturday Update

Well, today we got down to one chest tube and one IV line. Matthew is on the same meds as he was pre-surgery plus an antibiotic. They determined he had Ecoli and that is what caused him to spike a fever the first couple nights. We thought that was all set but tonight after bringing Mary and Mikey in to see their brother for the first time I got home and Mike called to tell me he had a fever of 103. Thankfully they were able to get it down quickly with Tylenol and cold compresses. We are not sure what caused this new fever but they have sent more fluids out for testing/culture.

His tummy is enlarged because of all the fluids they keep pumping in him (gave him platelets one night, then blood the next, then some other component of blood today that I cant even remember the name of anymore). Because he is so swollen they had us hold off on feeding him today and that caused him some agitation and a higher heart rate. They wanted to run some blood tests before we could feed him again and unfortunately he only has one access point (small veins are causing them trouble) so the doctor had to poke him for a blood draw and that took time. They have approved feeding him again but they are concerned that he is working too hard when we feed him orally so they have added an NG tube.

Hopefully he can rest throughout the night and not need to wake up for feedings or for medications. I'm going back to the hospital now to join Mike and Matthew. Mary and Mikey are in bed and Grandma and Grandpa are resting.

Thanks for all the well wishes and prayers!

Lori
