Another week begins...

We started our sixth week in the PICU today. Matthew is eating well and they are trying to let him off the CPAP for the day and only put it back on at night. The doctors continue with the slow weaning of medications. So far Matthew is tolerating it well. He is full of smiles for me during the day and only gets upset a couple times each day (especially when his food is not there when he wants it.)

Good news! We heard back from Boston today that Dr Del Nido thinks he can tighten up the cleft in Matthew's mitral valve to possibly reduce the amount of leakage. He also noted from the echos that one of the leaflets is a little stiff and is hopeful he can do something with that too. But, we are praying that a second surgery is not needed too soon and that we can get Matthew home and growing a little before he will have to go to Boston.

Its hard to say how much longer we will be in the hospital. Everything depends on Matthew at this point. We watch his reaction to changes they make very closely and keep working towards home. He is still on a low dose of epinephrine. If he can tolerate getting rid of that we are a step closer to our goal. If not, it indicates that his leakage is too much for him and surgery will be more immediate.

  1. I am so sorry Matthew is still in the PICU. I just wanted to let you know that Matthew and the rest of your family are still in my prayers. We will also be praying for him at my Bible Study tomorrow. God Bless!

  2. Thanks for the update. So glad to hear he is eating and smiling for you. :-) Glad you got some good news from the dr in Boston. Keeping Matthew and the rest of your family in my thoughts and prayers, especially praying that a second surgery is not needed and he can go home soon.
